New Orleans, La. – The
turbulent winds of Hurricane Katrina damaged and
destroyed many things in the city of New Orleans.
However, the winds were not able to blow out the desire
of the remaining members of Muhammad Mosque #46 to
continue the mission of the Most Honorable Elijah
Muhammad.
For over a month Friday night
Self-Improvement Study Group has been held in the home
of Bro. Errol and Sis. Captain Angele Muhammad on the
Westbank of New Orleans, an area that was blessed to not
suffer the severe flooding as the majority of the city
did.
For
Bro. Errol and Sis. Captain Angele, the entire
experience has given them an appreciation for the Muslim
community in New Orleans. Their appreciation of the
Teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad has increased
and also their love for the Believers. They said they
also have experienced a spiritual uplifting seeing the
believers come together to organize the Mosque 46’s come
back. This appreciation has also been experienced by
others as well. “My appreciation for study group has
really grown. It felt like we had not met in ages.
When we spend too much time in the world and away from
community the pull of this world becomes almost
impossible shake, study group gives us the ammunition to
overcome that pull. It feels good to know that Islam
survived Hurricane Katrina,” stated Bro. Calvin X.
On January 1, 2005 the believers
came together on a Sunday for the first time in New
Orleans since Hurricane Katrina to view the powerful
message delivered by the Honorable Minister Louis
Farrakhan live via web cast. “It was a much needed
guidance in this trouble time. Min. Farrakhan drove home
the importance of us having a willing spirit to
sacrifice to see our people free. Whether that means
going to jail, being falsely accused or even losing our
lives,” stated Bro. Terrol X. For others the Minister‘s
words added to their anticipation of Saviours’ Day.
“Minister Farrakhan’s words were very inspirational and
further heightened my desire to attend Saviours’ Day
this year in Chicago,” commented Sis. Michelle Muhammad.
In addition to viewing the web cast
the Believers sent off their first charity report since
Katrina, discussed plans to raise Saviours’ Day Gift and
attending the annual Saviours’ Day Convention and what
would be done with the mosque which was damaged by the
hurricane.
The first floor of the mosque was
damage by four to five feet of flood waters which also
tore away some doors and some windows. The roof also
was badly damaged. The mosque and the surrounding area
where the building is located are still without running
water, electricity and gas. “While discussing what must
be done to rebuild the community. Some of the believers
came up with the idea of going to the community and to
our brothers and sisters throughout the Nation to help
us out in anyway they can,” stated Minister Willie
Muhammad.
Many of the Believers who evacuated
the city and later found out that they lost all of their
personal items have decided to start their lives over in
other cities throughout the Nation. Thus the mosque
will begin its rebuilding process functioning as a study
group. “I look at it as an opportunity to prove test and
prove the quality of our faith and to show our
appreciation for the completely magnificent
demonstration of love that has been shown to us by Allah
in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad”, stated Minister
Willie Muhammad.
The Believers are looking forward to attending this
year’s Saviours’ Day and are working to organize a
reunion with other Believers who have now relocated.
